Meet our Panelists
Dr. Tanira Ferreira is the Chief Medical Officer of the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, a role that she has served for the last 7 years.
She is quadruple board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care, and sleep disorders and is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the division of pulmonary and Critical Care.
Originally from Brazil, she came as a medical student through the Harrington Latin American training program at JMH. After graduating from the Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil, she completed her residency and fellowship training at Jackson Memorial Hospital
Dr. Ferreira has had many leadership roles throughout her career and has been at the forefront of the pandemic coordinating and adjusting hospital protocols, focusing on quality, safety, efficiency, patient experience and public reporting. University of Miami Hospital and Clinics has now improved its USNEWS and World Report rank to #2 in South Florida.
Dr. Barry Gelman is the Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics and also the Chief Medical Officer for Holtz Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science, the University of Florida College of Medicine with an MD, and the University of Cincinnati College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services with a Masters of Education. He trained in Pediatrics at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, and in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at UM/JMH. He served as the Program Director for Pediatrics from 2002 to 2020. His interests include medical education, critical care medicine, and bioethics. Dr. Gelman lives in Pembroke Pines with his wife Donna and their dog Marli – a schnauzer/shih tzu mash-up. (They also have 2 adult sons, very much Barry/Donna mash-ups.) He is an avid Miami Hurricanes fan, and, being a native New Yorker, also roots for the NY Mets and NY Jets.
